Private Pilates

Private Pilates

Private sessions are a great way to learn movement fundamentals, address specific needs or training goals, and find deeper connections within your own body with the undivided attention of an experienced teacher.

Private sessions may include instruction on the mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrel, and often incorporate the use of small props such as rollers, bands, balls, etc. Recommended for individuals new to Pilates, rehabilitation clients, pre- or post-natal mums, and anyone wanting a customized training approach or Pilates program for their in-studio or at-home practice.

New to Pilates?

We strongly encourage new clients to sign up for our Introductory Package prior to joining group classes. Throughout three private sessions, you will discuss personal goals, learn about the “core” and basic foundations of Pilates, and learn how to safely use the Pilates equipment to better prepare you for a class. These sessions are designed to set you up for success in any group class. Inquire for more details or to discuss the options best fitted for you.

Move with a friend! Duets are a fun and cost-effective way of experiencing Pilates by sharing a private session. Each student will receive individual instruction and feedback as full attention of the teacher is split appropriately throughout the session.

The Fascinating History of Pilates

Pilates is more than just a popular exercise routine - it's a legacy born from the journey of a remarkable individual: Joseph Pilates. Born in Germany in 1883, Joseph's life was marked by a series of health challenges that sparked his determination to create a unique exercise regimen. This quest for wellness led him to develop a holistic approach to physical fitness that would later become the Pilates method we know and love today.

During World War I, Joseph's internment in England proved to be a turning point. He refined his techniques, helping fellow internees maintain their strength during their rehabilitation. His expertise was soon sought after by the medical community and he was asked to assist in the treatment and recovery of injured soldiers. It was during this time that the early prototype of the 'Cadillac' machine, a staple of Pilates equipment, emerged in the form of hospital beds. The innovative use of hospital bed springs to facilitate movement and build strength was born.

After the war, Joseph moved to New York City in 1926, where he opened his first studio and taught his method, initially called "Contrology." This approach emphasized controlled movements, core strength, flexibility, and overall body conditioning. As Pilates gained popularity, it attracted a diverse following, particularly among dancers and athletes. Over time, it has evolved into a widely practiced form of exercise, accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels all around the world.

What to Expect?

Congratulations on taking the first step to discovering a new type of strength, ease of movement and deeper connection. If you're new to Pilates, starting at a studio can be intimidating, but don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's a rundown of what to expect:

Before Your First Class:

  • Sign up online or call the studio to book your first class.
  • If you are able to fill out our brief health questionnaire and waiver beforehand, please do; otherwise, plan to come 10 minutes before your session to fill out the necessary forms.
  • Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing and the required grip socks (available to buy or borrow at our studio). Please refrain from wearing clothing with sharp zippers/buttons as it can damage the upholstery.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the studio and place belongings in the designated cubbies as you walk in.

Your First Class:

  • Expect a warm welcome from instructors and staff.
  • The instructor will guide you through a series of movements, starting with warmup exercises to get you comfortable with the equipment and techniques.
  • Be prepared to focus on your breath, core engagement, and intentional movements.
  • Don't worry if you're not sure what to do - the instructor will provide clear instructions and adjustments to help you get the most out of your workout.

Equipment and Props:

  • You'll likely use a mat or Reformer, which provides resistance to help build strength and control. Other pieces of equipment (tower, cadillac, chair, ladder barrel, spine corrector)  will also be used as your experience grows.
  • Other props such as resistance bands, balls, circles and rollers may be used to challenge, support and add variety to your workout.

What to Expect During Class:

  • A focus on some or all Pilates Principles: breath, concentration, control, precision, centering and flow.
  • Opportunities to modify exercises to suit your fitness level and comfort.
  • A supportive and encouraging environment - Pilates is all about progress, not perfection!

After Your First Class:

  • You might feel a bit sore (in a good way!), but this is normal as your muscles adjust to new movements.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek feedback from the instructor - We are here for YOU and want to make your experience at CIRKL Pilates a positive one.
